Our full time school counselor is Mrs. Larke Lanier. Our half day counselor is Mrs. Kelly McLendon.
The Van Wert Elementary School Guidance and Counseling Plan are based partially on needs assessments from teachers, parents, and students. These are completed and compiled by week 3 of the school year. This plan strives to meet the cognitive, affective and physical needs of the students. The counselor will coordinate and implement the delivery of counseling and related services. The counseling plan is based not only on the needs assessments but also on the school wide improvement plan as well as the goals of the Success for All Program.
Counselor's Duties:
- The counselor will provide individual crisis counseling to students on an as needed basis. Students may access the counselor through any staff member, parent, or self referral. The counselor will provide information to teachers and parents explaining the referral process.
- Small group sessions will be conducted as needed.
- There will be a minimum of 3 classroom guidance lessons provided to each homeroom. Additional lessons are available upon request.
- The counselor will provide family counseling as requested.
- The counselor will implement and supervise the ongoing program of peer tutoring and maintain data from this program.
- The counselor will attend and provide any functions necessary to ensure the proper running of the Student Support Team.
- The counselor will attend IEP meetings as requested by staff.
- The counselor will serve as the Peer Leader Coordinator.
- The counselor will serve as the Mentoring Program Coordinator.
- The counselor will serve as the Testing Coordinator for the school providing test preparation for students. Testing information will be made available to parents.
- The counselor will serve as the Family Support Team Coordinator.
- The counselor will coordinate at least one can-a-thon as well as handling Christmas for needy families.
- The counselor will perform all other duties as outlined in the Expectations for the School Counselor.
- The counselor will coordinate Drug Awareness Week.
